Lumbar Disc Herniation

A herniated disc occurs when the gelatinous center of a disc ruptures through a weak area of the hard outer wall, similar to the lining extracted from a jelly donut. Back or leg pain, numbness or tingling may occur when the disc material touches or compresses a spinal nerve. Treatment with rest, pain relievers, spinal injections and physiotherapy is the first step in healing. Most people improve within 6 weeks and return to normal activity. If symptoms persist, surgery may be recommended.
