Around the 1880s the word pathogen came into use. The term is typically used to describe a microorganism or agent that is infectious, such as a virus, bacterium, protozoan, prion, viroid, or fungus. Small animals can also produce disease, such as certain types of worms and insect larvae. These species, however, are generally referred to as parasites rather than pathogens in common parlance. The scientific study of microscopic organisms, including microscopic pathogenic organisms, is called microbiology, while pathology is called the study of disease that may include these pathogens. Meanwhile parasitology is the scientific study of parasites and the organisms hosting them. Pathogens can invade a host through several pathways. There are various episodic time spans for the major pathways, but soil has the longest or most enduring ability to host a pathogen. Human diseases caused by infectious agents are classified as pathogenic diseases while pathogens do not cause all diseases. Some illnesses, like Huntington's disease.
