Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of neuronal structure or function including neuron death. Most neurodegenerative disorders arise as a consequence of neurodegenerative mechanisms, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease , Alzheimer's disease, fatal family insomnia and Huntington 's disease. These diseases are incurable and cause progressive degeneration. As research progresses, many similarities on a subcellular level appear to relate these diseases to one another. Discovering these similarities offers hope for therapeutic advances which could simultaneously alleviate many diseases. There are many parallels between different neurodegenerative disorders including atypical assemblies of proteins as well as induced death of cells. Age is the main risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations of the mitochondrial DNA and oxidative stress all lead to ageing. Some of these diseases are late in development, suggesting that there is some aspect that changes for each disease as a person ages. One constant factor is that neurons gradually lose function in each disease as the disease progresses with age.
