Newcastle disease is a contagious viral avian disease affecting many domestic and wild bird species; it is transmissible to humans. Although there are rare cases where the disease gives a slight fever and / or conjunctivitis. Its effects are most notable in domestic poultry because of their high sensitivity and the potential for serious impacts of an epizootic on the poultry industries. It is endemic in many countries.
Human exposure to infected birds (eg poultry processing plants) can cause mild conjunctivitis and flu-like symptoms, but Newcastle disease virus (NDV) danger to human health. No treatment for NDV is known, but the use of prophylactic vaccines and health measures reduces the likelihood of epidemics.
