Political economy is the study of production and commerce, and their relationship with law , custom, and government, and the distribution of national income and wealth. In the 18th century, as a discipline, political economy originated in moral philosophy to explore the administration of the wealth of states, with the Greek word polity meaning "political" and the Greek word "okonomi" meaning "economy".Where it is not used as a synonym for economics, political economy may refer to very different issues. From an academic point of view, the term may refer to Marxian economics, approaches of applied public choice emanating from the Chicago school and the Virginia school. In common terms, "political economy" may simply refer to advice provided to the government or the public by economists on the general environment.
