Medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry are pharmacy disciplines at the intersection of chemistry, particularly synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties involved in pharmaceutical agents or bio-active molecules design, chemical synthesis and market growth. Compounds used as medicines are most commonly organic compounds, often divided into broad classes of small organic molecules (e.g., atorvastatin, clopidogrel) and "biologics" (infliximab, insulin glargine), the latter most commonly being protein medicinal preparations (natural and recombinant anticorps, hormones). Also useful as drugs are the inorganic and organometallic compounds. In particular, in its most common practice — focusing on small organic molecules — medicinal chemistry encompasses synthetic organic chemistry as well as aspects of natural products and computational chemistry in close combination with chemical biology, enzymology, and structural biology, aiming together to discover and develop new therapeutic agents.
