Their expertise in medical procedures, patient care and laboratory work contributes significantly to the smooth functioning of veterinary practices and the quality of care provided to animals. While veterinarians are responsible for diagnosing and treating medical conditions, Animal Health technicians assist in various capacities, from performing diagnostic tests to providing direct care for animals. This article explores the critical contributions of Animal Health technicians in veterinary clinics and hospitals, highlighting their diverse skills, responsibilities and the value they bring to both the healthcare team and animal patients. The work of an AHT is far-reaching and varies widely, depending on the type of veterinary practice and the animals being treated. In addition to their technical and clinical skills, AHTs play a key role in communication serving as vital links between veterinarians, the healthcare team and pet owners. They provide valuable education to clients about pet health, treatment options and preventative care, ensuring that pet owners are well-informed and empowered to make the best decisions for their animals' health [1].

Animal Health technicians are highly trained professionals who assist veterinarians in a wide range of clinical tasks. AHTs play a crucial role in assisting with surgeries and medical procedures. They help prepare animals for surgery, maintain sterile environments and assist with anesthesia monitoring. During procedures, they may administer medications, prepare surgical instruments and provide support to veterinarians, ensuring that the surgery runs smoothly. Diagnostic support one of the primary responsibilities of an AHT is performing diagnostic tests to help identify the health conditions of animals. They collect and process samples, such as blood, urine and feces and conduct laboratory analyses like blood counts, urinalysis and cytology. They may also assist with diagnostic imaging, including X-rays and ultrasounds and interpret results to help inform treatment plans. AHTs provide direct care to animals under treatment. They monitor the vital signs of animals, such as heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature, to ensure they are stable during and after treatments. They also administer medications, including vaccines, antibiotics and pain relief and assist in rehabilitation therapies such as physical therapy or wound care [2].

Client education and communication a critical aspect of an AHT’s role is interacting with pet owners. They often educate clients about the medical conditions their pets are facing, explain treatment options and provide advice on post-treatment care, nutrition and preventive health measures like vaccinations and parasite control. This interaction ensures clients are wellinformed and better able to care for their pets. In addition to clinical duties, Animal Health Technicians also assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, managing inventory and handling billing. These support roles help veterinary clinics and hospitals run efficiently and maintain organized workflows. In emergency situations, AHTs are often the first responders, providing immediate care to injured or critically ill animals. They stabilize patients, perform emergency procedures and work closely with veterinarians to make quick, informed decisions about further treatment.
