Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase is an inhibitor that decreases blood cholesterol levels by blocking endogenous cholesterol conflation. It also lowers triglyceride levels using an asyet- unproven method.
In cases of hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridemia, atorvastatin helps to reduce total cholesterol, low viscosity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in a curedependent manner. In extensive trials including patients with hypercholesterolemia, atorvastatin was found to be less effective than lovastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin in lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels. When compared to atorvastatin monotherapy, the combination of atorvastatin and colestipol shows an more effect in higher LDL-cholesterol reductions and lower triglyceride reductions in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia.
In cases with mixed hyperlipidaemia, atorvastatin provided higher reductions in total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol than with fenofibrate or nicotinic acid, due to having lower triglyceride reductions and small improvements in high viscosity lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol.
Uses of atorvastatin calcium
Atorvastatin is used in combination with a healthy diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL and triglycerides) while increasing "good" cholesterol (HDL). It's one of a class of drugs known as "statins." It reduces the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. Lowering "bad"cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing "good"cholesterol and helps in reducing the risk of heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks. Other lifestyle changes that may help this medicine work better like exercising, decreasing weight if overweight, and quitting smoking, in addition to eating a good diet (similar to a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet).
Side effects of atorvastatin calcium
A very less number of patients taking atorvastatin may have moderate memory loss or confusion. If these uncommon effects appear. Muscle difficulties are a rare side effect of this medication (which can infrequently lead to veritably serious conditions called rhabdomyolysis and autoimmune myopathy). Other side effects include muscle soreness, tenderness, and weakness (particularly when combined with a fever or unusual frazzle) ( similar as change in the quantum of urine.
This drug rarely causes muscle problems rarely leads to a very serious condition called rhabdomyolysis or autoimmune myopathy. If you experience any of these symptoms during treatment, and if these symptoms persist after your doctor has stopped taking this drug, tell the doctor immediately: muscle pain / tenderness / weakness. Signs of kidney problems (such as a change in urine output), especially if you have fever or abnormal malaise.
This drug rarely causes liver problems. If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, tell your doctor immediately: Eye / skin yellowing, dark urine, severe stomach / abdominal pain, persistent nausea / vomiting.
Precautions
The medication must not be taken during pregnancy. Atorvastatin may cause harmful effect to a future child. It's critical to support with pregnancy while using this medication. Atorvastatin is a drug that is used in combination with a healthy diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride (fat) levels in the blood. This medicine may help with medical problems caused by fats clogging blood arteries (e.g., casket pain, heart attack, or stroke). It may also be used to treat certain categories of heart and blood vessel disorders in those who have heart disease risk factors. HMG-CoA reductase impediments, or statins, are a class of medicines that inhibit the enzyme HMGCoA reductase. It works by inhibiting an enzyme that the body needs to manufacture cholesterol.
This paper concludes about the uses of atorvastatin calcium, side effects of atorvastatin calcium and its precautions.
