Scientific Tracks Abstracts: Adv Practice Nurs
A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge and practices regarding care of the newborn among postnatal mothers from the selected hospitals of Moga, Punjab. The objective of the study is to assess the knowledge, to assess the practices, to find out the correlation between knowledge and practices regarding care of newborn among postnatal mothers, to find out the association of knowledge and practices with selected demographic variables such as age in years, religion, education of mother, occupation of mother, occupation of husband, parity, mode of delivery, type of family, dietary pattern and source of information and to develop and distribute an information booklet on care of newborn. Non-experiment descriptive research design was adopted. Research setting was Hospital, Moga, Punjab and 100 postnatal mothers by using convenient sampling technique. Preliminary drafting of 30 multiple choice questions on knowledge and 20 statements for practices on checklist and information booklet was prepared maximum (44%) of postnatal mothers had average knowledge and minimum (16%) of postnatal mothers had good knowledge regarding care of newborn and that maximum postnatal mothers (58%) had satisfactory practices and minimum (42%) postnatal mothers had unsatisfactory practices regarding care of newborn. The knowledge and practices had positive correlation regarding the care of newborn among postnatal mothers which was found statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level. Chi-square test revealed that there is a significant association between knowledge and practices on newborn care and selected demographic variables such as type of family, source of information had significant impact on knowledge and age in years, education of mother had significantly impact on practices level of postnatal mothers regarding care of newborn. The study concluded that there is a need to create awareness among the postnatal mothers regarding newborn care to reduce newborn complications and death.
