The use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) has gained in popularity. Studies have shown that one of the reasons cited for this popularity is that this healthcare system seems to be more congruent with users own values, beliefs and philosophical orientations towards health. One in five persons surviving breast cancer will develop lymphoedema and the current gold standard of treatment is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which can be often being cumbersome and lead to non compliance. It is well documented that lymphoedema isnt just attributed to swelling; as well as an increase in limb size, the swelling can cause mobility problems, pain, and have a profound effect on the psychological wellbeing. How can acupuncture offer an integrated approach to lymphoedema? I will present the quantitative and qualitative data from my research. Through using a standardized point prescription volume reduction was achieved for all participants. The quantitative and qualitative data also highlights that acupuncture and moxibustion was effective in addressing the physical and psychological components associated with lymphoedema. For patients, this would not only give them more treatment options to make informed choices, but could give them the opportunity to empower themselves toward their treatment goals and long-term care.
