Abstract: The Japan Nursing Association (JNA) has developed a system to certify nurses who can use advanced nursing skills and knowledge to provide a high level of nursing practice, leadership, and consultation in a specific nursing area (Japan Nursing Association, 1994). The purpose of certified nurses is to provide high standard nursing care to those who need nursing care in any setting, using skilled nursing skills and knowledge in specific nursing fields, and to improve the quality of nursing care. As a result of the increasing number of patients with chronic respiratory diseases and the shortage of MDs in respiratory care in Japan, the Chronic Respiratory Nursing CN (CR-CN) was established in 2010. There are about 360 CR-CNs in Japan providing high quality nursing care including patient educations, self-care management supports, symptom management, and patients and families psychological supports. I will discuss about roles and the education program of CR-CN. The main roles of CR-CN are evaluation of respiratory function and respiratory management according to each stage of the disease (stable, exacerbation, and terminal), implementation of respiratory rehabilitation to maintain and improve respiratory function, and self-care support to prevent acute exacerbations.
