Abstract :

Peptic ulcer is a major gastro-intestinal disorder caused by an imbalance between offensive (gastric acid, pepsinogen secretion) and defensive (mucous secretion, gastric mucosal integrity) factors. The peptic ulcer refers to chronic ulcerative disorder of the upper gastro-intestinal tract, which have a common participation of acid and pepsin in their pathogenesis. Gastritis and peptic ulcers affect up to 50% of adult populations in developed countries. Helicobacter pyroli infection may be responsible for up to 95% of duodenal ulcers and 85% of gastric ulcers, worldwide. In the developed world, H pylori incidence has been slowly declining over the past 50 years and with increased NSAID use NSAID induced ulcer has increased. This has resulted in a decline in duodenal ulcers (almost always associated with H pylori infection) and an increase in gastric ulcers (the main site of ulcers caused by NSAIDs). Peptic ulcer disease caused 0.46% of all deaths worldwide in 2002, an average of 42 deaths per million people per year. Number of advantages are associated with use of herbal medicines as opposed to pharmaceutical products some of which include include reduced risk of side effects, effectives with chronic conditions, lower cost, widespread availability. The aim of present study was to determine the anti ulcer activity of polyherbal formulation including Aloe vera and Glycyrrhiza glabra against aspirin and ethanol induced gastric ulceration in Swiss albino rats. The study was conducted using Omeprazole as the standard. Many drugs are in the market to treat ulcer, but they have lot of adverse effects. Use of combination of herbal drugs proved that these are effective alternatives for chemical drugs. When the results were compared this formulation showed better activity in ethanol induced ulcer than in aspirin induced ulcer.
