Tephrosia purpurea Linn. is a polymorphic, much branched, sub erect, perennial herb used traditionally for the cure of various ailments such as ulcer, epilepsy, tumor, diuretic and asthma etc. In the present study, leaves of Tephrosia purpurea Linn. were used to evaluate for its anti hypertensive effect by using isolated frog heart model. For this study, ethanolic extract was used since ethanol is a universal solvent for many active phytoconstituents. Phytochemical screening of ethanolic extract showed presence of active principles like steroids, carbohydrate, Saponins, glycoside and Flavonoids. Ethanolic extract of leaves of Tephrosia purpurea Linn. (EELTP) reduced the heart rate and force of contraction of the isolated frog heart, these effects being dose dependent. Increasing the concentration of the EELTP to 8 mg/ml reduced the heart rate of isolated frog heart from 62 per minute to 44 per minute. The percentage reduction in force of contraction was observed up to 76.47%
