Assessment of local skin reactions due to subcutaneous insulin injection

Abstract :

Introduction Local Skin reactions are the complications of the treatment with insulin in insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus patients. This effect is studied in the types of skin reactions at the site of insulin injection is evaluated. Their association with site of injection, type of insulin, duration of insulin use and the technique of injection were assessed. Abstract The results showed that the association between development of skin reactions with the technique of injection and the duration of insulin use was statistically highly significant. The Major types of skin reactions were found to be in the form of induration, pigmentation, and lipohypertrophy. Pigmentation was the most common type of skin reaction in the early years of treatment, whereas lipohypertrophy observed later. Induration comprised the major kind of skin reaction appearing in our patient irrespective to the duration of insulin use. Result The ASD participants formed two clusters based on their like-dislike ratings, i.e., the more-disliking (ASD-MDL, n=34) versus moreliking groups (ASD-ML, n=16) by model-based cluster analyses. Significant between-group CAEP amplitude differences were found in the P1, N1, and P2, and latency differences in the P2. The CAEP differences further confirmed ASD subgroup memberships. The ASD-MDL showed significantly higher non-verbal intelligence and lower arousal level than the ASD-ML. Learning Objectives * Injection Technique * Choosing the appropriate site of Injection * Insulin Injection Site should be routinely inspected to detect any abnormalities at the site of injection. * Advise the Caregiver or patient to use the technique correctly. * The site of Insulin Injection should be examined often by the Diabetic Clinic.

Fadhil Wasfi is currently a Lecturer of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology in the School of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan. Previously he has worked as a Dermatologist, General Medical Practitioner in various hospitals. He was also the former Member of the Examining Committee for the Iraqi Board Postgraduate degree in Dermatology and Venereology
