Objective: This study was aimed at determining the clinical features of non-odontogenic tumours which are helpful as indicators in the diagnosis of malignant and non-malignant non-odontogenic orofacial tumours. Study design: This was a prospective study performed on patients with swellings in the oral and maxillofacial region clinically suspicious of being tumours of non-odontogenic origin in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria. The statistical variables that were analyzed include patients� biodata, clinical features including the radiological features and the histopathological diagnosis of the lesions. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Inferential analysis was done using Student�s t-test and Chi-square, binary logistic regression and adjusted odds ratio as appropriate. Results: Among the 40 patients histopathologically diagnosed as non-odontogenic tumours, 25 (62.5%) were females and 15 (37.5%) were males. Histological features showed three different categories: Benign, reactive and malignant lesions. The growth rate was observed to be significantly associated with the histological diagnosis of the non-odontogenic tumours. Conclusion: This study showed that non-odontogenic tumours occur mostly in younger patients with a female preponderance. The mandible and the preauricular sites were the commonest solitary sites. Lymphadenopathy and non-mobility of the swellings were strong clinical indicators for malignant non-odontogenic tumours.
