Abstract :

During the last decades, pharmacogenetics has become increasingly important for clinical practice. The use of pharmacogenetic testing can help tailor psychotropic treatment and inform personalized treatment plans with the highest likelihood of success. Much of the utility of pharmacogenetic testing has been in clinical settings other than psychiatry. Within psychiatry, several studies have found genetic variations associated with altered treatment response/efficacy and increased risk of side effects. Genetic testing of such variations can help determine which patients are more or less responsive to psychiatric disorders and which are likely to have an increased burden of side effects. Inclusion of this information may lead to appropriate treatment selection to improve treatment outcomes. Utility of genetic testing in psychiatric clinical practice and emphasize the need for further development of new genetic tests that identify variations associated with altered treatment response and efficacy. Armed with a patient's genetic information, clinicians can more quickly identify effective therapies, thereby limiting the long-term suffering and economic burden imposed on many chronic disease patients. Pharmacogenetic testing in psychiatry is still developing and rapidly gaining widespread acceptance. Numerous articles and reviews, as well as a growing number of published studies, demonstrate the utility and cost-effectiveness of genetic testing for psychiatric patients. Preliminary studies have documented that clinical application of pharmacogenetic testing can improve treatment outcomes. However, the utility of genetic testing in psychiatry needs to be further substantiated by large randomized controlled trials.
