Carcinoma mammae is the most common malignancy that happens in women worldwide. To assist management and improve the prognosis of carcinoma mammae, identification of the various markers as a prognostic factor is required. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) is excreted mainly in cytoplasm of tumor cells and stromal cells. Thus the evaluation of the stromal MMP-9 expression provides information about the prognosis of carcinoma mammae, especially in the early carcinogenesis process and correlate with progression of the tumor based on its ability to degrade the basement membrane and growth factor activation. This study was cross sectional study that compares the expression of MMP-9 in in-situ carcinoma mammae and invasive carcinoma mammae which consist of 25 slides of invasive carcinoma mammae and 21 slides of in-situ carcinoma mammae and stained with immunohistochemical methods. After analyzing the data using chi square analysis, p=0.004 was obtained. Because p (0.004) < 0.05, there was significant result of the comparison expression of MMP-9 in-situ carcinoma mammae and invasive carcinoma mammae.
