Abstract :

Aim: This study aimed to identify the procedures performed by emergency nurses and the frequency of their practice. Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional research design was used in the study. The universe of the study consisted of 70 emergency nurses working in a state hospital in Northern Cyprus. 51 nurses who agreed to participate in the study constituted the sample of the study. A response rate of 73% was achieved. A written informed consent was received from the nurses and a written permission was obtained from the hospital. Data were collected using "The Form of Demographic Characteristics of Nurses" prepared by the researchers and "Emergency Nursing Procedures Questionnaire" consisting of three sections to determine nursing procedures performed in the emergency department. Result: The mean age of the nurses in the study was 34.90±7.74 years. Of them, 88.2% were female; 54.9% were married and 70.6% held a Bachelor's degree. The mean durations of employment and emergency care department experience were 12.5±8.8 years and 7.8±6.07, respectively. Of the participants, 68.6% had an emergency nursing certificate and 66.7% participated in training after their graduation. The procedure most frequently performed by nurses was "participating in the implementation of medical diagnosis and treatment plan" (3.50±0.28), followed by "fulfilling management and organizational duties" (3.43±0.67). The least frequently performed procedure was found to be "nursing care" (3.10±0.40). Participants were found to most frequently perform "patient admission in emergency department" (100%, 51) and "respiratory and circulatory control" (98%, 50) among the emergency nursing procedures. "Providing care for patients receiving BIPAP/CPAP treatments" (15.7%, 8) and "following up patients with pacemaker" (3.9%, 2) were among the least frequently performed procedures. Conclusion: The emergency nurses in Northern Cyprus were found to perform nursing care procedures least frequently and participate most frequently in procedures related to medical diagnosis and treatment.
