Abstract :

A systematic review of the literature identified 5 competencies that student nurses perceived as effective teaching in nursing practice (teaching ability, safe learning environment, clinical competence, caring interpersonal relationships and evaluation). The literature reviewed did not explore the meaning of teaching ability in depth and the purpose of this project was to build on the work already completed, to learn more about how students describe effective clinical teaching at Douglas College. The results of focus groups with BSN nursing students will be presented with explanation of how the data correlates with the literature. Presenters will highlight how students report the need for a safe learning environment coupled with the instructors competence in practice and in teaching.
