Abstract :

Gastrointestinal infectious diseases are very common worldwide and an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Available drugs often have low efficacy or are associated with many adverse effects. Therefore, alternative drugs are necessary to treat gastrointestinal complications. This study intended to identify medicinal plants in Taounate that can affect common gastrointestinal disorders and diseases. Semi structured questionnaire was used during the interview with the informants having traditional botanical knowledge. The use of medicinal plants were documented using an interview data sheet mentioning the gender, age, marital status, academic level and experience of the informants and scientific and vernacular names, families, part(s) used, method of preparation and mode of administration of the botanicals and the preparations. A total of 49 spontanous medicinal plants from the Taounate province, have a traditional medicinal role in the treatment gastrointestinal diseases. Analysis showed that most plants affecting the gastrointestinal belonged in the Lamiaceae family. The most used part of the plants was the leaf. Decoction was the most popular form of treatment used. Pharmacological studies on the therapeutic effects of the spontaneous plants mentioned in this study are necessary in order to investigate their claimed clinical effects and the use of their effective compounds to produce natural and useful drugs. Therefore, these findings are important for the management of gastrointestinal disorders and to conduct future studies on traditional medicine for drug development.

Biography :

Salma EL Amane is a third year doctoral student in botany and valorization of plant resources at Moulay Ismail University, Faculty of sciences. She obtained her master degree in Plant Protection and Biotechnology and she has 25 years old. Her research interests centre around the valorization of medicinal and aromatic plant and their conservation.
