Abstract :

Implementing evidence-based care should be a task for nurses in a leading position. However, demands for a balanced budget and high care production are often prioritized instead of development of healthcare methods. The tension between employees wanting to develop care and the financially responsible can occur. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the university course "Overview in research and development methodology for persons in leading position?. Another goal was to investigate possible differences in research interest and research experience between participants in the course and nonparticipants. Method: Healthcare staff in leading position in primary care participated in the study. The course was organized as five half-days seminars during a three-month period and included both quantitative and qualitative research methods. An educational questionnaire used for statistical teaching was distributed to the participants at the beginning of the course. The questions demonstrated different types of statistical variables. Relevant questions from the same questionnaire were sent to the healthcare staff, the control group, who did not attend the course. The answers from the questionnaires were compared between the course participants and the control group. The result showed no demographic statistical differences between the groups. The research interests and research experience of those who participated in the course did not differ from those of the non-participants; neither did the inclination to implement and/or discontinue methods in clinical activities. A significant correlation was found between the number of scientific articles per year and the correctness of the statistical answers. The study showed that a university course of this kind is feasible. The pedagogical model worked well, the participants' knowledge increased, and at the final examination, they were able to present, oppose, and discuss research articles in a highly competent way.
