Introduction: The attitude towards elderly is closely related to the willingness to care for the elderly. According
to the increasing elderly population and changes in society, technology and environment, it may need to gain
a better understanding of new generation nursing studentsā?? attitude toward older people.
Purpose: To understand new generation nursing studentsā?? the attitude toward older people and its influence
factors.
Method: It was a cross-sectional study. The data were collected in 2018 from a college of nursing students
(15-20 years old). Two classes were randomly selected for each grade (grade1-5). The response rate was 82.8%
(n=418). Excluding incomplete questionnaires, there were 400 participants in this study. The structured
questionnaire contained sociodemographic data and Koganā??s Attitude toward Older People Scale (KAOPS)-
Taiwan version.
Result: Total scores of the KAOPS were from 34 to 238. The mean of the KAOPS was 166.94 (SD23.3) in
the study. The study indicated the nursing students who were the lower grade (r=-0.12, p=0.015), lived
with elderly in the past (r=0.15, p=0.003), having been cared by elderly (r=0.11, p=0.024) and having a nice
relationship with grandmother (r=0.17, P=0.000) (r=0.14, P=0.003) and grandfather (r=0.1, P=0.033), might
have a more positive attitude toward older adults.
Conclusion: Young generations of nursing students have a positive attitude toward older adults. It might be
helpful to construct a positive attitude toward older adults by increasing the interaction with family elderly to
build up an intimate relationship.
