In this work, the combinations of phosphorous-containing fire retardants and smoke suppressant Zinc Borate (Firebrake ZB) are used as additives to produce fire retardant and smoke suppressant rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam. Fire retardants are Ammonium Poly-Phosphate (APP), Tri-Ethyl Phosphate (TEP), Di- Ethyl Ethyl Phosphate (DEEP) and Oligomeric TEP. The impact of the combustion modifier on the flame height and smoke density is examined by DIN 4102 and the NBS smoke chamber method. TGA and SEM are also used to observe the thermal effect of additives on the foams. The results are summarized in the following [Table 1]. The lowest flame height and smoke density are obtained from T2-Z2 (TEP-zinc borate mixture). There is a synergy between TEP and zinc borate in terms of the reduction of flame height and smoke density. Phosphorous content does not directly determine the combustion behavior of PIR.
