Abstract :

Statement of the Problem: Stroke, also known as apoplexy, if defined according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is rapidly developing clinical signs of focal (or global) disturbance of cerebral function lasting more than 24 hours (unless interrupted by surgery or death) with no apparent cause other than of vascular origin. The purpose of this study is to show the burden of stroke in the population of Peshawar and to spread awareness in the community about it and also to aware the health care authorities about its frequency, types and possible etiology so that some productive steps are taken in order to decrease or control its incidence. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Stroke cases were collected from the records of the aforementioned hospitals which had occurred in Peshawar between 2010 and 2014. 1072 patients were identified from the records of Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar. Findings: The incidence rate of Stroke from 2010-2014 in Peshawar was 29.98 per 1,000,00 population from 2010-2014 or approximately three cases per 1,0000 population. Per year incidence rate was 3.77 per 1,000,00 population in 2010, 5.39 per 1, 000, 00 population in 2011, in 2012 it was 5.87 per 1,000,00 population, 7.91 per 1,000,00 population in 2013 and 7.02 per 1,000,00 population in 2014. The mean age of patients was 60.39+15.3. The male female ratio was 1.08:1. Out of 1072 cases, 10.5% were cases of ischemic stroke, 8.5% cases were of hemorrhagic stroke while with the 867 (80.9%) of cases there was no type mentioned in the patientâ??s records. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of stroke was 18.65%. The CFR of hemorrhagic stroke was 18.5% and 15.0% for ischemic Stroke. Conclusion: The incidence of stroke has increased in the previous five years.
