Abstract :

Objective: Aim of this study is to investigate and describe the production, collection and disposal of medical waste (MW) and characterize the exposure of oncology staff from Cape Verde Hospital. Method: Descriptive study was conducted with quantitative and qualitative methodology, using semi-structured questionnaire, check list and observations on the spot to ascertain the situation of the handling of the MW and the risks location map. A total 50 participants were considered for this study, they are professionals from a hospital who handle solid chemotherapy waste. Results: The data pointed lack of professional qualification of exposing them to the risk of occupational accidents and for inappropriate handling of MW in the oncology service. Conclusion: Professionals, patients, general population and the environment are exposed to risks because of lack of training and an appropriate management plan of MW.

Biography :

Maria Isabel da Graça Silva Ramos is a Nurse, completed her Master’s in Public Health in Department of Science and Technology at University of Cape Verde. She is a Specialist in Public Health from the University of Cape Verde and is a Physiotherapist Universidade Estadual Paulista, Brazil. She has done her graduation in the Department of Science and Technology from the University of Cape Verde. She was a Superintendent Nurse in 2010-2012, Coordinator of Nursing Licensure in 2009 to 2011 and Head Nurse of the Pediatrics Service at the Dr. Agostinho Neto Hospital in 2002-2010.
