Abstract :

We have recorded the characteristics as well as the total cost of treatment of a sample of 2,586 subjects undergoing dialysis and 100 patients peritoneal. The average age was at 68.7±1 years for the patients (63.7% being male) with an artificial kidney and the average age was at 64.5±16.8 years for the patients (54% being male) undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The cost does not differ considerably either from the remaining European countries or from non-European countries. As far as the artificial kidney is concerned, the average age ranges from 66.3±13.2 years (49.4% males) in Czech Republic to 68.9±15 years (58.8% males) in France. However, concerning peritoneal dialysis, Australia and New Zealand present an average age from 62 years (60% males) to 60.2±7.3 years (62.3% males) in Japan. In Greece, the most common cause of end-stage renal disease for patients with an artificial kidney is the unidentified presenting a percentage of 33.02%. A similar situation takes place in Spain (30.3%), Italy (30.3%), Hungary (41.7%), Poland (25.8%) and Portugal (28.1%). In our country, Greece, the most common cause the end-stage renal disease, concerning patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis is diabetes (32%), as well as in Australia, New Zealand (34,9%), Brazil (36%), Mexico (61%) and South Korea (48%). The average cost of hemodialysis per patient, based on figures from Belgium, Germany, Holland, England and France amounts to 66.212�, 44.575�, 65.739�, 29.322� and 53.758� corresponding, whereas in Greece the cost amounts to 39.800� in public hospitals. More specifically, the cost for Greek patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis comes to 59.317� per year and per individual (APD method) and to 44.797� (CAPD method). In Denmark, the corresponding cost reaches 16.178�, in Spain it reaches 25.826�, in England 41.989�, in France 63.463�, in Belgium 67.580�, in Germany 73.892�, in Holland 77.254� and in Switzerland 81.991�. The fore mentioned cost includes only the process of peritoneal dialysis. In conclusion, we have noticed, in our study, that the estimated cost for both methods of dialysis in Greece is similar to the cost in Canada, whereas it is higher in both European countries, such as Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and in non-European ones, for instance in America.

Marilena G Koukou has completed her PhD from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Medicine. She worked as Medical Science Liaison and Tender Manager, acting as bridge (MSL) between the company and members of the healthcare industry and finding efficient ways to manage collaboration with the physicians, as well as to improve interaction with KOLs. She works throughout a product’s lifecycle as local regulatory representative, helping to ensure that is utilized effectively; planning, implementation and development of integrated proposals-solutions for both public and private sectors and; handling the communication with company suppliers abroad (from all major manufacturing countries such as Switzerland, England, Netherland, Germany, Italy, Austria etc.). She manages procedures for respective ISO Certification 9001:2008, recycling system and EKAPTY (formerly EKEVYL) and representing the company at opening of the tenders in both Public and Private Hospitals.
