Abstract :

This descriptive study was aimed to investigation of pain managements in surgical patients. The study was conducted in 12th October 2015-1st April 2016in surgical clinics at a university hospital. The study sample consisted of 456 patients who had a planned surgery during this period. To conduct the study, written/verbal permissions/consents were obtained from the scientific ethics committee, surgical clinics and patients. To collect the data, the researcher used a questionnaire including items questioning the patientsâ�� sociodemographic characteristics and their opinions about their pain levels and their satisfaction about pain managements before and after surgery. The questionnaire was developed according to literature findings. The data were analyzed using the SPSS for Windows 18.0, numbers, percentage distribution and the Chi-square test. According to the sociodemographic characteristics 52.4% (n=239) of the patients were men and the mean age of patients were 50.25�±1.85. In the preoperative period, 49.6% of patients had pain. Pain evaluations of them were the average of 7.05 point (1-10) and 12.1% of patients with pain gave 10 point to their pain. In the pain treatment, 24.6% of patients received only oral analgesic and satisfaction levels of the pain treatment were the average of 6.00 point (1-10) and 6.8% of patients with pain gave 10 point to satisfaction levels of the pain treatment. Also in the postoperative period, 59.9% patients had pain. Pain evaluations of them were the average of 5,07 point (1-10) and in the pain treatment, 36.4% of patient received only intravenous analgesic. Patient satisfaction about pain treatment were the average of 4,99 point (1-10) and and 7.5% of patients with pain gave 10 point to satisfaction levels of the pain treatment. In accordance with the results of the research, before and after surgery patients had different levels of pain and most of patients were unsatisfied with the pain management.
