With the success of Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapies (HAART), HIV infected person are living longer and staying healthy. However, like all persons in our community, they will develop acute health conditions (Respiratory infections, GI complaints, skin conditions, and minor wounds) as well as common chronic conditions (HTN, COPD, diabetes) that require and can be appropriately managed in the primary care setting. This workshop, using case presentation and audience response system, will provide a general overview of HIV disease and identify the key HIV disease monitoring measures that need to be considered. The treatment of common acute and chronic medical conditions will be discussed and general but over reaching medical management consideration addressed.
Christine Brennan is the Director of the LSU Health site of the South Central AIDS Education and Training Center (SCAETC @ LSU Health), is active in the training of all level of providers regrading HIV prevention, testing and treatment. As a Nurse Practitioner, she has over 25 years in HIV treatment, research and clinical education with numerous publications and presentation to her credit. In addition to treatment and training, she is active in policy development regarding the testing and treatment of HIV.
