The hospital system is now an outside-opened system which interacts with many supply and medical service providers. The current hospital, account held by its complexity, is closer of a large supply chain whose care providers aim at satisfying the patient than a system in isolation. The optimization of patients? flow passes by a more global approach to improve the cooperation between various structures (public or private hospitals, medical or surgical departments, units). Modelling or simulation of flows or processes (as it began in the industry forty years ago) is very interesting in Healthcare. It tends to be developed more and more in hospitals. Modelling and Simulating processes began in business sector in the seventies with different ?modelling languages? describing and analyzing various concepts: Strategy, features, decision making, relationship with the environment. The increasing number of patients in the French hospitals but also all around the world shows the importance of the management of patient?s flow. Healthcare Information Technology is becoming an important tool in modelling and simulation of patient?s flow. We?ll see with examples how it could be useful in different fields: Organizational, architectural, strategic and managerial models.
Hervé Rivière is an emergency physician who spent 23 years in French Public Hospital as Physician and Head of an Emergency Department. He worked on Implementation of HIT in hospital. He has been graduated in Economy and Management in Healthcare at Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. His title thesis was: ?Modelling and simulation of patients? flow in an emergency department?. He also worked in Regional Public Agency of Midi-Pyrénées (Agence Régionale de Santé) as Medical Advisor. He is currently Physician Executive at Intersystems France and works on different aspects of Healthcare Information Technology and Electronic Patient Record.
