Mucinous carcinoma of breast, a distinct entity: From cells to genes

Abstract :

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. Pure mucinous breast carcinomas (PMBC), characterized by abundant accumulation of mucin are regarded as rare histological type of neoplasm, accounting for only about 2% of breast malignancies. However, lower grade tumour lesions, lower nodal involvement and higher expression of estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptor have shown favourable prognosis and thus long-term survival in previous PMBC studies. Nevertheless, their risk factor associated with misdiagnosis due to imaging features or tumour resistance to chemotherapeutic treatment, is still challenging. Screening of pure mucinous carcinoma can cause an important diagnostic pitfall due to usually ill-defined lobulated, sonographic and mammographic margins, further it may lead to delayed or misdiagnosis. It is less sensitive to neoadjuvant chemotherapies and radiotherapies. Thus, the direct involvement of secreted mucins and the associated underlying cellular mechanisms remains to be determined. Treatment data showed that in most of the case they are treated with standard therapy. However, recent genomic analysis such as strong expression of MUC2 (94%) and MUC6 (71%) marker or transcriptionally distinct features have led it distinct from other types of ER receptor positive breast cancer. Future approaches needs more accurate prognostic and identification of optimal therapeutic strategies to avoid over treatment or personalize therapy. This paper reports the clinicopathologic case study of an atypical prevalence of mucinous carcinoma in a 30-year female.

Sarika Rana is a breast cancer survivor, got treatment at RGCI, New Delhi. Professionally, she is a Research Fellow at IARI, New Delhi, working on biofuels. She has done her Masters in Biotechnology with internship in Immunotechnology from IISc Bangalore (India). She has 06 researches, 01 book chapter publication in reputed international journals and also has presented abstract in various national and international conferences. Recently, she got a full scholarship to attend FORCE?s Annual Cancer conference in Philadelphia (USA). Apart from this, she is also actively involved in breast cancer awareness in India.
