Abstract :

Student absenteeism is a common problem and a major concern in higher education as it can lead to inadequate learning and poorer academic performance on the part of those missing class. A search of the literature identified no study focusing on absenteeism among nursing students. Studentsâ?? attendance in lectures and practical hours depends on many factors. A better understanding of reasons why students attend or do not attend class may help nursing faculty educator to plan and improve their courses to increase student attendance. Therefore this study was conducted to assess nursing student's attitude & factors that influence nursing student classroom attendance. A descriptive research design was conducted on a convenience sample of three hundred sixty nine (369) nursing students at faculty of nursing, Mansoura University from October 2016. A questionnaire was used to collect the demographic data of the students; in addition the students were also asked about factors that motivate/ encourage or prevent students for attending the lecture. The current study represent that, the majority of the students are not working during the study and the higher percentage of them were reported that they attend the lecture for many reasons: fear of repetition in exam (37.7%) success in the subject & save absenteeism percentage (40.7%) understand the lecture (36.3%) and asking questions(22.8). Availability of the course content (24.7%) one lecture/ day (33.3%), a lot of exams & assignment (32.2%) and no addition from subject lecturer (26.6%) were the most common factors that prevent student to attend the lecture. The study concluded that there are many different factors affecting nursing faculty student to attend the lecture; access to information via the internet & availability of the course content, lack of motivation, absenteeism and fear of failure in exam were the most common factors. Therefore the researcher recommended that not all class notes are posted on line, but that detailed notes are only handed out in class.
