Abstract :

The US maternal mortality rate has doubled in the past 25 years and has risen despite improvements in health care and an overwhelming global trend in the other direction. Infant mortality rates continue to fall, but US maintains one of the highest rates of infant death among developed countries. For a country, that spends more than any other country on health care and more on childbirth related care than any other area of hospitalization, this is shockingly poor return on investment. Nurses need to recognize and respond to early signs of trouble and teach mothers and families to do the same. This poster presentation will address nursing implications for hemorrhage, infection, obesity, PIH, HELLP syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, drug misuse, prematurity, birth defects, SIDS, cesarean section, operative delivery and mental health issues. betty.bowles@mwsu.edu
