The purpose of this paper is to compile research from reputable sources in an attempt to delve into the care experience of a postoperative patient in delirium. Estimated costs of this complication that is almost specific to the elderly reach into the billions yearly. Increased length of stays in inpatient beds are a side effect of this complication and at many times can be linked to the poor management of the delirium. It is found many patients may not be receiving the care that research suggests is correct. Causes of delirium, factors relating to delirium, suggested treatment of delirium, and suggestions for practice changes will be discussed herein.
