Abstract :

According to the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, pressure injury is damage to the skin and/or underlying soft tissue which occurs primarily over boney prominences or which can be attributed to medical or other devices. Factors which may contribute to the formation of pressure injuries include pressure, friction, poor nutritional status, medical devices, and medical procedures. It is imperative that nurses assess for factors which may lead to the development of pressure injuries and intervene as necessary. This presentation will provide information on the etiology of pressure injury, stages of injury, relevant nursing assessment, and therapeutic management of pressure injuries.

Biography :

Marsha Cannon has received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in nursing degrees from the University of South Alabama and a Doctorate in Education for Nurse Educators from the University of Alabama. She has taught in licensed practical and registered nursing programs with a theoretical and clinical focus in adult health nursing. Her areas of interest/expertise include cardiac nursing test taking strategies, test construction, and mentoring of faculty and students. She has reviewed numerous nursing resources and textbooks and serves on the Editorial Board of a Journal of Nursing and Women’s Health.
