Studies on chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Insecta) infesting birds of district Noushehro Feroze, Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract :

The parasitic lice are assigned to the (orders: Mallophaga and Anoplura) are similar in many ways and the main difference between them is the structure of the mouth parts and size, chewing lice are almost found in birds and few mammals throughout the world and all geographical region, lice are obligate ectoparasites spend their entire life cycle on the host body. The chewing lice (Phthiraptera, Amblycera, Ischnocera) of resident birds of Noushehro Feroze district during 2016 to 2017. During survey, variety of birds were captured randomly from the study site, total 55 birds were collected including, Grey francolin (Francolinus pondicerianus), Quail (Coturnix coturnix), Feral rock pigeon (Columba livia), Mallard (Anas platyrhnchos), Common teal (Anas crecca), Black coot (Fulica atra), Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). These were brought in advanced parasitology research laboratory of Zoology Department, University of Sindh, Jamshoro and birds were examination for their chewing lice through fumigation and visual examination methods, the recovered specimens were dehydrated in graded series of ethanol, cleared in clove oil and permanently mounted in Canada balsam and diagrams were made with drawing tube. Present study is conducted first time in the Noushehro Feroze district for these ectoparasites chewing lice of birds. Total 200 specimens were collected 10 species, 5 of Menoponidae and 5 species of Philopteridae. The data on chewing lice in the present survey (Family: Philopteridae, suborders: Ischnocera) and Menoponidae, suborders: Amblcera), include Anatoecous icterodes (Nitzsch, 1818); Anaticola crassicornis (Scopoli, 1763); Ardeicola expalliadus (Blagov, 1940); Columbicola culumbae (L.1758); Fulicoffula luridae (Nitzsch, 1818) (Philopteridae: Ischnocera); Trinoton querquedulae (L, 1758); Menoprinter postium (Ansari, 1951); Psedomenopon pilsoum (Scopoli, 1763); Pseudomenopon pilsoum (Scopoli, 1763); Colpocephalum (Denny, 1842) (Menoponidae: Amblycera). All species of chewing lice reported first time from the district Noushehro Feroze Sindh, Pakistan.
