Abstract :

The purpose of this survey was to clarify the relationship between work motivation and family support attitudes among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in Japan. The subjects of this study were nurses working at ICUs in hospitals in Japan. The items on the survey forms included subjectsâ?? basic attributes, as well as questions related to work motivation and family support attitude. A total of 365 responses were received (recovery rate: 36.5%). For the statistical analysis, the conformity of data to the causal relationship model was assessed with work motivation as the independent variable and family support attitude as the dependent variable and response data with no missing values in the survey answers from 311 respondents was examined using structural equation modeling. According to the results, the goodness of fit of the causal model data with respect to the analytical model was of a statistically acceptable level and a statistically significant positive association (path coefficient=0.669) was observed between the family support attitudes and the work motivation of ICU nurses. In addition, the variables of nursesâ?? years of nursing experience and highest level of education completed displayed a positive correlation with family support attitude. These results indicate that we were able to develop a tool for measuring family support attitudes of ICU nurses; further, the study results also suggest that work motivation influences these attitudes.
