Reliability and validity of the epilepsy self-efficacy scale for Turkish people with epilepsy

Abstract :

Background: In epilepsy, self-efficacy is an important part of successful treatment and has an effect on symptoms, functional capacity and general state of health. Nurses should develop and evaluate self-efficacy skills by conducting a comprehensive patient training aiming to maintain physical stability, avoid acts that would make the condition worse and recognize the early symptoms of getting worse. To assess self-efficacy behaviors of epilepsy patients, valid and reliable instruments in short form are needed. Aim: This study aimed to adapt the epilepsy self-efficacy scale to Turkish. Methods: A methodological design was used in this study. The study population consists of 99 patients that accepted to participate in this study and who had epilepsy. Firstly, the language validity of the scale was addressed. In the following step, for content validity, experts' views were obtained and the scale was revised accordingly. As for reliability, it was determined using "test-retest reliability", "cronbach alpha method", "item total score correlation technique" and "scale alpha if item deleted". Results: The epilepsy self-efficacy scale was translated to Turkish for language validity. For content validity, Kendall Goodnessof- fit Correlation Test was performed (W=0.60; p>0.05). Test-retest reliability showed substantial agreement for the total score (ICC: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.98). The item total correlation ranged from 0.19 to 0.83. Internal consistency was found that Cronbach's alpha coefficient as 0.93 and satisfying. Conclusion: The epilepsy self-efficacy scale is a valid and reliable instrument for use in Turkish epilepsy patients and that it can measure the self-efficacy in epilepsy patients.

Biography :

Filiz Ozel has completed her Undergraduate study in the Nursing Section of Uludag University School of Health (2004-2007). After obtaining her undergraduate degree, she has worked as a Clinic Nurse (2007-2009). She has initiated her Postgraduate study in the Department of Internal Diseases Nursing, Ege University Health Sciences Institute. She has completed her Doctorate education from the Department of Internal Diseases Nursing, Ege University School of Nursing. She has then worked as an Observer in the Behçet’s Syndrome Center af New York Langone Medical Center Seligman Center For Advanced Therapeutics. She took part in a number of national and international congresses and courses during her postgraduate and doctorate education. She is currently working in the Department of Internal Diseases Nursing, Ege University Nursing Faculty as a Research Assistant.
