Objectives: Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) as a modality of treatment for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is now increasingly being practiced in most nephrology centers of our country. Despite advances, time on therapy for patients on PD is low. This retrospective analysis was carried out at ESI Hospital, Maniktala. In this retrospective data analysis, we aim to identify the risk factors for drop out. Methods: The records of 78 patients, who were initiated on PD at ESI Hospital, Maniktala since 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. The patients' demographics, clinical and laboratory parameters were recorded and analyzed. The current PD patient base is 27 patients. Results: Out of 78 patients 45(58%) are male and 33(42%) are female. 62 patients (82%) were in ESRD because of Diabetic nephropathy followed by Hypertensive nephropathy 8(10%) & Chronic glomerulonephritis 8 (10%) respectively. 70(89.8%) patients shifted to PD from Hemodialysis. The age variation ranged from a minimum of 6 to maximum of 87 with a mean of 54.83±14.7 years. Maximum patients i.e. 51(65.4%) were in the age group of 40-63 years. 48(62%) patients had reimbursement. Average overall time on therapy on those patients who had dropped out was 6.60 patient months. Most common cause of drop outs was cardiovascular (Congestive Heart Failure + Myocardial Infarction), which was seen in 47 (60.3% of patients). Other causes of drop out were cerebro-vascular, peritonitis and mechanical complications. There was a significant correlation between age and hemoglobin levels (p<0.009) and also age and 24 hour ultra-filtration levels (p<0.046). Conclusions: In conclusion, most of the patients were of the age group of 40-60 years age group. The average time on therapy of these patients was 6.60 months, with the major cause of drop out being cardiovascular.
