Scenario of chronic kidney disease in a developing country: a single central experience

Abstract :

Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension appear to be the global risk factors of Chronic Kidney Disease. Our studies focus on the association of these risk factors with different variables such as age group and sex. We tried to find whether CKD staging has any significance on the overall prevalence.Therefore, providing us with an overall situation of CKD prevalence. Methods: Here a retrospective study of 142 patients aging from 20 to 95 years and above were taken into account. These data were collected from patients admitted to North East Medical College situated in Sylhet,Bangladesh. Bangladesh being a developing country itself should be quite sufficient in explaining the situation of CKD in any developing nation. We used SPSS to perform Cox regression along with basic statistics in order to analyze the association between the factors of Chronic Kidney Disease. Findings: Our studies show a higher number of patients who have both DM & HTN and those with only HTN. HTN seems to be leading the pack of risk factors with a 78% prevalence amongst our study patients with 44% having both DM & HTN, and 34% having only HTN. Although age group wasn't significant in our Cox regression test, we saw that people aged 51-60 and 61-70 appear to be more prone to CKD. Our studies also show that 69.23% of males showed signs of progression compared to the 51% progression rate of females. Interpretation: Our studies emphasize the need to take necessary measures to control Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension at an early age..

Holding an MBBS from Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College (1990) and an M.Sc. in Renal Medicine from Imperial College School of Medicine, University of London (2001), he's renowned for teaching and research in nephrology.
