This lecture will address variety of malignancies including acute leukemias, lymphomas and myelodysplastic syndromes that occur as a result of prior cytotoxic chemo- and/or radiation therapy. Secondary malignancies are highly aggressive diseases with less favorable outcome compared to their de novo counterparts. These tumors often carry chromosomal abnormalities that are associated with refractory disease with short survival rates. Therefore, the majority of these patients do not respond to conventional treatments that indicates the requirement for more targeted treatments. The speaker will explain pathophysiology of secondary malignancies with molecular and genetic features, treatment options and clinical course based on the professional experience and the literature. In additions to these subjects, the attendees of this lecture will be familiarized with the need for rigorous genetic analysis of these tumors to develop candidate targeted therapeutics, so that these patients may be offered more effective and less toxic treatment options.
Deniz Peker is an Assistant Professor of Pathology with board certification in Hematology subspecialty. She has clinical and research experience in hematologic cancers including treatment related leukemia. Peker has several publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals including Blood. Peker’s past and current research focuses on high grade hematological malignancies, therapy related myeloid neoplasms, refractory B-cell lymphomas, myeloma and HIV-related lymphoproliferative disorders. She is member of various national and International medical societies including United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Collage of American Pathologists, European Hematology Association and Society of Hematopathology. She also is a distinguished faculty member at UAB since 2012 and she received awards for outstanding teaching.
