Sleep related seizures can often be mistaken for parasomnias such as confusional arousals, sleep terrors and sleep walking. The differentiation between these two categories of neurological illnesses is necessary as their treatment and prognosis are different. The purpose of the presentation is to summarize recent advances in sleep related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE), formerly known as frontal lobe seizures and highlight the similarities and differences between SHE and nonrapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnias. The talk will also underscore the semiological and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying both NREM parasomnias and SHE as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available for both conditions. At the conclusion of the talk the attendees should understand the importance of differentiating between SHE and NREM parasomnias and what tools to use to diagnose and treat each disorder.
