Sepsis: Early detection intervention in the ED at Southside Hospital targeted for ED nurses

Abstract :

Background: Sepsis is a life threatening complication of an infection. Even with current quality initiatives sepsis remains as the top expensive condition treated in US Hospitals, reported as $20.3 billion in 2011 was spent in the US. Despite the cost to treat, mortality rates for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock range from 10-50%. Early recognition is crucial to improve outcomes and decrease sepsis related mortality. Community Needs Assessment: An evaluation of the current state of sepsis rates at Southside Hospitals ED; the current target and gap analysis of what is missing to meet national guidelines. Methods: A quality improvement project at the ED of Southside Hospital located in Bay Shore, NY, with 300 beds. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to increase awareness, understanding, and adherence to the current national guidelines. Intervention: Educational sessions for ED nurses will be provided on all shifts in the ED at Southside. Evaluation: will include survey results of nurse confidence pre and post intervention. Also monitoring of post intervention hospital sepsis mortality rates 3 months post intervention and 6 month post intervention.

Biography :

Margaret Stroehlein is pursuing her DNP at Hunter College in NYC. She received her MS degree specializing in ANP from SUNY Stony Brook in 1997. She is Board Certified from ANCC and adult health nurse practitioner. She is an Assistant Professor at CUNY Queensborough Community College and her courses include senior medical surgical nursing. Prior to teaching, she served many years in hospital settings in various administrative roles. She serves on the executive board as Treasurer for the Nassau Suffolk Nursing Educational Council. Her DNP capstone project is an educational intervention for ED nurses in Sepsis.
