Meridian Energy Analysis Device (MEAD) is a currently popular tool in the scientific research of meridian electrophysiology. In this field, it is generally believed that measuring the electrical conductivity of meridian acupoints provides information about the balance of bioenergy or Qi-blood in the body. We have summarized PubMed database based on some original articles from 1956 to 2014 and the author�´s clinical experience. Through this communication, we provide clinical examples of MEAD application, especially in the field of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), discuss the reliability of the measurements, and put the values obtained into context by considering items of considerable variability and by estimating sample size. MEAD is making a valuable contribution to the diagnosis of Qi-blood dysfunction. It can be assessed from short- and long-term meridian bioenergy recordings as long as fully prepared. It is one of the few methods that allow auxiliary TCM diagnosis, monitoring the progress of disease, therapeutic effect and evaluation of patient prognosis. The holistic approaches underlying the practice of TCM and latest trends in modern medicine toward the use of objective instruments require in-depth knowledge of the mechanisms of meridian energy, and the MEAD can feasibly be used for understanding and interpreting TCM theory, especially in view of its expansion in Western countries.
Ming-Yen Tsai serves as a Director of Internal Medicine, Department of Chinese Medicine at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at Chang Gung University. He is now studying for his Doctorate in China Medical University and focuses on the effect of herbal acupoint paste for patients with intradialytic hypotension. He has his medical expertise in geriatrics, cardiopulmonary disease, nephropathy, and cancer in TCM field. He has built a new integrated health-care model for cancer treatment under the support from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of China. He is also keen on the clinical research of TCM and passion in improving its international visibility
