Abstract :

Spontaneous regression of lung metastases of some sarcoma cases has been reported in literature as a very rare event. A case of spontaneous regression of pulmonary metastases from Grade II chondrosarcoma was observed and the definitive diagnosis of the metastatic lesion was histologically proved. Fifty-nine years old male was diagnosed as Grade II chondrosarcoma of his left proximal femur with no lung metastasis. Limb salvage operation was performed for the primary lesion in the proximal femur with replacement with mega-prosthesis. One year after the surgery, pulmonary metastases were detected on plain X-ray. With CT scan images of the lung. Because of the number of metastatic lesions was more than 80, any further treatments were abandoned. During follow-up, the size and the numbers of pulmonary metastases increased. However, six months after the detection of the metastases, some lesions regressed in size and the numbers of metastases stopped to increase. One year after the diagnosis of the pulmonary metastases, most of them were regressed on CT images. Immunological investigation of serum revealed the elevated level of MAGE-A4 antibody. Tumor immunity might be considered to play an important role in the regression mechanism. A very rare event of spontaneous regression of pulmonary metastasis from chondrosarcoma was observed. This phenomenon might implicate the immunological response to the sarcoma and the possible approach to treat sarcoma patients.
