Abstract :

A Survey Sample - Medical Faculty Junior And Senior Students? Perceptions of Patient Safety and Medical Errors (SuSa- MedFa): Patient safety is one of the current and important subjects that have been at stake within the context of improving the quality of health care in recent years. Decreasing and even eliminating the medical errors is the main target of patient safety. A report from Institute of Medicine estimates 98,000 deaths annually due to medical errors. Health organizations must identify high risk procedures, develop an environment for reporting medical errors without fear of punishment, and provide resources for patient safety. This study aims to review medical faculty junior and senior students? perceptions of patient safety and medical errors and to provide awereness about these subjects. 70% of respondents are junior and 30% are senior students. According to respondents, the causes of preventable medical errors that occur in importance: 82% work load density and lack of time to examine a patient; 77% excessive patient load; 72% lack of education for medical staffs and 61% medical staffs? individual errors. Itself or with a relative who meet medical malpractice rate is 23%. Strategic goals of giving a lecture about patient safety and medical malpractice to medical faculty students should include constituting the culture focused on patient safety, taking the lead in providing of patient safety, creating an awareness and sharing information of patient safety, supporting of employee related to report system, communicating and collaborating with other medical staffs.

Biography :

Unal Demirtas has completed his M.D. at the age of 25 years from Erciyes University. He has joined Turkish Air Force and he participated the Flight Surgeon and Physiological Training. He has been officially registered as a M.D. student in the M.D. Programme of the Department of Military Health Services, Gülhane Military Medical Academy.
