Objective: To review the scientific productions about the HIV/AIDS having reference to the development and evaluation of public health policies and analyze the observational studies on the theme. Method: This is a systematic review of the literature carried out from 2008 to 2013, with the descriptors HIV, AIDS, STDs, health promotion and public health policies in PubMed. It included 344 papers and after reading the title, abstract and full text were exclude 331 articles, so we analyzed seven Brazilian papers and six international (European and North American). Conclusion: The main focus of the studies was the funding for coping with the epidemic and promotion actions. The Brazilian policy for coping with the epidemic is highlighted with the free dispensing of medication and the breach of patents for medicines. The majority of observational studies analyzed partially met the criteria described in STROBE initiative.
