Purpose: A large number of preventable adverse events are encountered during hospital admission and in particular around surgical procedures. Checklists may well be effective in surgery to prevent errors and adverse events. We evaluated the effect of Image Preoperative Preparation Auditing (IPPA) checklist compared to traditional text checklist. Methods: A single-group experimental design was applied. 19 nurses used traditional checklist for pre-operating patient preparation from May to November 2012. A total of 132 records were made. From December 2012 to April 2013, a total of 130 records were checked by using IPPA checklist. The number of incompletion items of the checklist was evaluated. Results: The traditional checklist had nine incomplete reports and the IPPA checklist had none. The time for spending in traditional checklist protocol was three minutes longer than IPPA checklist protocol. According to the nursing labor cost of Taiwan, each surgical patient will save NT$26.76. Conclusion: Use image for learning is widely recommended on pedagogic science, but rarely used as a major checking tool for operating preparation in Taiwan. The results of this study not only demonstrated that the IPPA had greater effect to ensure the integrity of the preoperative preparation, but also more cost-effectiveness.
