In order to evaluate the effect of integrated intervention for service providers on partner notification and STD/HIV related consulting services in public STD clinics, total of 6 qualified STD clinics in general hospitals were randomly selected as the research sites in Xuhui and Minhan Districts in Shanghai, which was supported by WHO. A total of 860 outpatients were interviewed by the trained interviewers as baseline survey, out of which 412 were in intervention group and 448 were in control group. Then the integrated intervention for service providers was implemented for 6 months, and after 3 months of the integrated intervention, a total of 869 outpatients were interviewed, 451 in intervention group and 418 in control group. By comparing the status of partner notification and STD/HIV related consulting services in public STD clinics pre and post the implementation of integrated intervention, the effects of integrated intervention were evaluated. About partner notification, compared before and after intervention: in intervention group, the proportion of ?requirements of informing sexual partners condition? increased from 66.99% to 88.03%, the proportion of ?proposing partner check/treatment? increased from 73.30% to 89.14%, the proportion of ?informing the reasons for this condition? increased from 19.90% to 67.18%, the proportion of ?providing contact card? increased from 14.56% to 31.49%. About STD/HIV related consulting services, in intervention group, all of proportions of four service projects, including counseling, providing more selection for HIV counseling, suggestion for HIV testing, telling the place of HIV testing, increased more than 10%. Moreover, after intervention, the patients? satisfactions on those services increased statistically from about 10% to 80% (p<0.01). Our study indicated that integrated intervention for service providers and managers can improve significantly the provision of partner notification and STD/HIV related consulting services in public STD clinics in Shanghai.
