Abstract :

Background & Aim: Certified nurse administrators take an important role in providing the educational system for nurses to enhance their professional developments. The contents and quality of continuing education programs are delegated to each hospital and facility and the nurse educators of continuing education often do not have specialized training to carry out their roles. This study aimed to reveal the current conditions of continuing education system at hospitals and to identify the educational contents required to the nurse educators of continuing education with the aspects of certified nurse administrators. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed to 281 certified nurse administrators who were randomly selected from the registration list of Japan Nursing Association. The questionnaire design was based on the standards of continuing education and group interviews and we asked for a free description about necessary special educations required to the nurse educators. We divided answer contents into a cord and grouped while discussing the words of the same contents. This study data was referred to the research published in 2016. Results: 101 certified nurse administrators responded the survey. Over 60% had a Director or Assistant Director position with over 30 years of nursing practice experiences including the nursing management. Approximately, 70% of the head nurse was also involved in planning, implementation and evaluations. The educational programs required to the nurse educators of continuing education were identified 9 categories-communication, personal relationship, self-management, planning and practical skill, analysis and evaluation, management, human resources development, general and special educations and follow-up seminars for the nurse educators of continuing education. Conclusion: This study revealed the necessity to provide supports and concrete education programs to enhance the nurse educators� personal skills.

Atsuko Watanabe has completed her Master�s degree from School of Public Health, Kyoto University. She is currently a PhD candidate at Osaka University specializing in Nursing Education and Nursing Management and an Assistant Professor and teaches Fundamental Nursing at Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Science at Aino University, Osaka, Japan.
