The study of vitamin D 25(OH)D level among vitiligo patients in Indonesia

Abstract :

Low level of vitamin D 25 (OH)D serum is found in many autoimmune diseases, including vitiligo. Vitamin D regulates the immune system through its various effects on immune system. However, there were no previous studies of serum vitamin D levels among Indonesian vitiligo patients. A total of 43 vitiligo patients were included in this study. The clinical spectrum, occupational status, body mass index (BMI) and Vitiligo Area Scoring Index (VASI) of each patient were evaluated, along with serum 25 (OH)D examination to determine the relationships between serum 25 (OH)D level and daily exposure to sunlight, nutritional status and the extent of disease. In this study, there were 24 adult patients and 19 children (aged below 18 years) patients; of which 21 were females and 22 males. The most common types of vitiligo found were vitiligo vulgaris (83%), while other types of vitiligo were focal (6%), segmental (4%), acrofacial (2%) and mixed (2%). Segmental type is found in only one child, which is also showed in this study. Most of the patients occupation were students which lack daily sunlight exposure (39.5%) and 65.1% patients had normal BMI. Based on VASI score, 65.1% patients had VASI score ranging from 0.1-2.49. Level of vitamin D serum in the patients were mostly insufficient (67.4%), averaging between 12.09 ng/ml in adults and 15.79 ng/ml in children. According to statistical analysis, there are no correlation between the level of vitamin D serum with daily exposure to sunlight, nutritional status and the extent of disease.

Reiva Farah Dwiyana is a Dermatovenereologist, completed her Master’s degree in Health (2002) from Padjadjaran University, Indonesia. Further, she has completed her Fellowship as a Researcher and Clinical Observer at Dermatology and Allergology, Juntendo University, Tokyo, Japan. She has obtained her Doctoral degree from Padjadjaran University. Currently, she works at Dermatology and Venereology Department, Hasan Sadikin Hospital as a Pediatric Dermatology Staff. She has published 4 papers in reputed journal.
